Magic

Magic is, and ever will be, an art rather than a science; even so, it's been generations since it came on the scene, so it's perfectly possible to take a college class in it. Magic short-circuits physics, and as such is always a shortcut; its results are available immediately, but at the price of impermanence. And there is always, always a sacrifice to make, however small. Any human wishing to use magic in any way needs a focus, be it the traditional magic wand, an amulet or talisman, sometimes even a hand tool; this focus must be one, having no moving parts, and it must be many, having been put together of at least three different materials. The sacrifice to make to obtain a focus is simple: time and effort. Even people who don't make their own focus, maybe because they inherited it, must spend some of their irreplaceable time looking after it, be it nourishing leather with grease, polishing metal, redrawing sigils when they start to wear.

Magical Education

Magic, having become an integral part of society, is naturally incorporated into the education system.

Cyberspace thus maps more closely to realspace. However, it too has been exposed to magic for many decades now, making it severely unpredictable. It is even possible, from select places using an arcane technology that only exists in a few specimens, to enter cyberspace directly, Nirvana style. One may then move at the speed of electricity, alter data packets on the fly to break encryption or steal passwords. There are caveats, as always when mixing magic and tech. "Data wraiths" can bring nothing with them except their skill, lest they risk living through the plot of The Fly upon rematerialization. They have to go in naked. They cannot rematerialize at another access point, in general, although a few people have gained that particular skill. And there is a hard time limit: the body is suspended, and stops living. No food, air, water comes in or out. Professional wraiths swim lap and practice yoga to improve their apnea endurance; two or three realtime minutes can feel a lot longer when moving at relativistic speeds, but they are still not infinite. Meditation techniques are used to "pause" oneself and extend that time when idle. There are stories of demons and even archons roaming the net in this fashion -- if that's the case, they would have a time advantage, just out of better lung capacity. Since ordinary encryption can do little against this sort of incursion, countermeasures involve expert systems that can mess with a wraith's psyche by dredging up bad memories or scary scenarios, and of course other wraiths, who will do that better than an expert system.
