MagicMagic is, and ever will be, an art rather than a science; even so, it's been generations since it came on the scene, so it's perfectly possible to take a college class in it. Magic short-circuits physics, and as such is always a shortcut; its results are available immediately, but at the price of impermanence. And there is always, always a sacrifice to make, however small. Any human wishing to use magic in any way needs a focus, be it the traditional magic wand, an amulet or talisman, sometimes even a hand tool; this focus must be one, having no moving parts, and it must be many, having been put together of at least three different materials. The sacrifice to make to obtain a focus is simple: time and effort. Even people who don't make their own focus, maybe because they inherited it, must spend some of their irreplaceable time looking after it, be it nourishing leather with grease, polishing metal, redrawing sigils when they start to wear. Magical EducationMagic, having become an integral part of society, is naturally incorporated into the education system.
Field trips might include visits to renowned magical sites, ancient ruins where early post-Armageddon mages practiced, or workshops of legendary focus crafters. In this academic setting, magic isn't just about casting spells. It's about understanding the weight of each spell, the sacrifice it demands, and the broader impact on society. Through education, magic becomes a tool wielded with responsibility and knowledge rather than mere instinct or desire. Magic ItemsMost magic items are built with at least one part coming from within the Realm of Order or the wasteland surrounding a fortress of Chaos. As an example, an analog thaumometer (a simple device to measure ambient magic) can be built with a bimetallic strip, with one of the strips having been shaved from a demonic girder, with the resulting forces bending a needle on a dial; a digital thaumometer on the other hand may be a piece of electronics that measures the frequency difference between an ordinary quartz crystal and one chipped from a quartz vein in the Shield Wall, and displays it on a 7-segment display. Examples of other magic items that have integrated parts from these realms:
While the post-apocalyptic era has seen a blend of old and new, especially in the realm of magic, the sentiment of preference between analog and digital remains. Traditionalists argue that the raw, unprocessed nature of analog devices offers a more precise understanding for a more experienced user, while proponents of digital devices highlight their relative precision, versatility, and ease for newer, more inexperienced users to grasp the important factors. These debates often become lively topics at magical forums, seminars, and, of course, online discussion boards. Magic, Data Wraiths, and the internetCyberspace thus maps more closely to realspace. However, it too has been exposed to magic for many decades now, making it severely unpredictable. It is even possible, from select places using an arcane technology that only exists in a few specimens, to enter cyberspace directly, Nirvana style. One may then move at the speed of electricity, alter data packets on the fly to break encryption or steal passwords. There are caveats, as always when mixing magic and tech. "Data wraiths" can bring nothing with them except their skill, lest they risk living through the plot of The Fly upon rematerialization. They have to go in naked. They cannot rematerialize at another access point, in general, although a few people have gained that particular skill. And there is a hard time limit: the body is suspended, and stops living. No food, air, water comes in or out. Professional wraiths swim lap and practice yoga to improve their apnea endurance; two or three realtime minutes can feel a lot longer when moving at relativistic speeds, but they are still not infinite. Meditation techniques are used to "pause" oneself and extend that time when idle. There are stories of demons and even archons roaming the net in this fashion -- if that's the case, they would have a time advantage, just out of better lung capacity. Since ordinary encryption can do little against this sort of incursion, countermeasures involve expert systems that can mess with a wraith's psyche by dredging up bad memories or scary scenarios, and of course other wraiths, who will do that better than an expert system. The Nature of Data Wraiths: 1. Training: Becoming a Data Wraith is not for the faint-hearted. In addition to tech skills, one requires deep spiritual and mental training. There are secluded academies, often hidden in neutral zones, that train potential wraiths. Here, they learn to strengthen their minds, hone their magic, and understand the intricacies of the digital realm. 2. Ethereal Perception: Inside the net, everything is experienced in a sensory and metaphysical way. Websites might feel like vast cities, data packets like pulses of energy. Encryption can be experienced as walls, mazes, or even treacherous terrains. 3. Vulnerabilities: While they possess enhanced abilities within the net, Data Wraiths are also susceptible to digital "phenomena". Malware can feel like poison or quicksand. A computer virus can act as a virulent disease, attacking the wraith's essence. Countermeasures: 1. Mind Traps: These are expertly designed data constructs that latch onto the consciousness of a wraith. Once triggered, the wraith gets entangled in a simulation of their worst fears or regrets, effectively immobilizing them or even driving them mad. 2. Sentinels: Digital versions of the Sentinels, these are guardians of critical data nodes. Unlike wraiths, they're not humans diving into cyberspace. Instead, they're AI with magical enchantments. They can sense intrusions and neutralize threats swiftly. 3. Ephemeral Data: Important data may be stored in ephemeral formats. These data sets exist momentarily and then disappear, reappearing in another location. Only authorized wraiths or users would know the pattern or have the key to access this moving data. 4. Spiritual Firewalls: These are barriers laced with ancient runes and spells. They don't just block unauthorized wraiths, they actively repel them, sometimes even harming or banishing the intruder. Factions and Alliances
Legends and LoreAs with every aspect of this post-apocalyptic world, tales of legendary wraiths and epic cyber battles have become part of the cultural fabric. There are stories of wraiths who've gotten lost in the net, their essences now haunting specific data nodes. Others speak of wraiths who've merged with AI, becoming something more than human, existing both in the physical and digital realms. As humanity rebuilds and redefines itself, so does the concept of existence. With the interplay of magic and technology, the lines between the physical and digital, the tangible and ethereal, continue to blur. Magic and its purposes and uses in modern societyMagic and its Embodiment of PassionIn the chaotic aftermath of a world reshaped by the apocalypse, humanity has discovered the profound influence and power of magic. Unlike science or technology, magic cannot be easily systematized or confined within rigid boundaries. Instead, it is a force shaped by passion, belief, and personal experience. Here's a look into how magic has embedded itself into the fabric of this post-apocalyptic society. Magic as a Reflection of Passion Above all, magic is considered the embodiment of intense emotion or passion. Its effectiveness can vary based on the strength of emotion invested in it, making each magical act a deeply personal experience. This concept finds its roots in the power of music-based magic, which emerged as one of the first discovered forms of magic in this new world. Music and Magic The sonic weapon deployed by the Brotherhood of Job at Armageddon exemplifies the union of magic and music. Combining elements of a rallying heavy-metal cry and an audiobaric pulse weapon, this sonic instrument was as much a symbol of passion-driven magic as it was a tool of war. Crafting Individual Magical Theories While traditional rituals rooted in cultural or regional beliefs retain their potency within their places of origin, the broad study and practice of magic encourage individual interpretation. As a result, aspiring magicians are often tasked with crafting their own unique theory or framework of magic. Educational institutions offer courses that guide students in understanding magic's foundational principles. These courses also present a range of pre-made paradigms, somewhat akin to academic specializations, allowing students to choose a path that resonates with their personal beliefs or interests. The Role of Magicians and Illusionists The term "magician" in this world is reserved for individuals who practice true magic, which distinguishes them from "illusionists" – performers who rely on sleight of hand and theatrical tricks to entertain. Given the showmanship involved in both professions, a clear distinction is maintained for the audience's sake. Most stage shows performed by illusionists take place under anti-magic wards to ensure authenticity and prevent any magical interference. However, the line between magicians and illusionists isn't entirely clear-cut. Many illusionists, drawn by the allure of genuine magic, often delve into the study of the arcane. Given the parallels in mindset between creating illusions and wielding magic, it's not uncommon for illusionists to possess real magical abilities, albeit ones they reserve for off-stage use. Conclusion Magic, in this post-apocalyptic landscape, is more than just a tool or weapon. It's an art form, a reflection of human passion, and a deeply personal journey. Whether through song, ritual, or individual exploration, magic continues to shape the world, offering both wonder and danger in equal measure. Magic and Technology: A Harmonious ConfluenceIn a world reshaped by the apocalyptic events, a curious phenomenon is observed: the seemingly discordant forces of magic and technology not only coexist but frequently harmonize. This merger has paved the way for a new era of innovation and creativity, blurring the lines between art, science, and the arcane. Magic as an Art Form To the practitioners of magic, it is often seen as an extension of art. Given that art has long incorporated technological advancements into its tapestry, the infusion of magic into this matrix seems like a natural progression. This relationship between magic and art propels creators to experiment, combining the tangible with the intangible. Alchemy: A Fusion of Science and Magic The ancient practice of alchemy, a precursor to modern chemistry, finds renewed importance in this world. Alchemists, straddling the realms of science and magic, utilize ingredients from the Freewilds to create potent remedies. Their work's effectiveness is amplified by an understanding of chemistry, illustrating that knowledge of the scientific method enhances magical practices. Modern Bards: Strumming the Strings of Magic The tools and instruments of magic have evolved with time. Traditional instruments like lutes and violins, while still revered, share the stage with modern electric guitars and keyboards. These instruments are preferred by contemporary bards and enchanters for their versatility and the ease with which they can be repaired. Moreover, their electrifying sounds offer a unique conduit for channeling magical energy. The Legacy of Forrest M. Mims Forrest M. Mims, the renowned electronics hobbyist, serves as an emblematic figure in this confluence of magic and technology. Though his work ceased after the apocalypse, his legacy is etched into the annals of both technology and the Realm of Order. His project notebooks are treasured relics, providing a glimpse into the mind of a pioneer who existed on the cusp of two eras. Conclusion The intertwining of magic and technology challenges conventional wisdom about their incompatibility. This post-apocalyptic world testifies to the limitless potential that arises when innovation meets imagination, forging a path of discovery that neither force could achieve on its own. Sacrifices in Magic: A Binding ContractIn the labyrinthine realm of post-apocalyptic magic, the rules are clear but steep. For the uninitiated observer, it might seem that magic holds an eternal, unyielding power. However, those learned in the art know that every enchantment, no matter how potent, is ephemeral. It is bound by time and requires consistent renewal through sacrifices. Grading Enchantments: From Fair to Exceptional
Maintenance Sacrifices: A Personal ConnectionWhile the idea of sacrifices might conjure up images of elaborate rituals led by skilled magicians, the reality is more democratic. For most enchanted objects, even those without an inkling of magic can perform the required maintenance sacrifice. It’s a personal bond between the wielder and the magical object, reinvigorating the enchantment and keeping it alive. However, this doesn't add to the enchantment's power but merely sustains it. The Exception: Hands of the Principle While humans grapple with the constraints of temporal magic, the Hands of the Principle operate on a different plane. Their might is near-limitless, and they can, on rare occasions, circumvent the rules binding other magical entities. But even they are not completely exempt. Archangels, for instance, need to ensure their weapons are continuously imbued with fresh blood – primarily of demons. In their absence, non-Saved humans become an unfortunate alternative. Conclusion Magic, in its core, is a bond between the enchanter, the enchanted, and the universe. This bond, while potent, is transient and demands upkeep. It serves as a reminder that even in a world filled with mystical wonders, there's always a price to pay. Magical Culinary Practices and Beliefs
In Pop Culture:
The transformative power of foodThe old adage, "You are what you eat," takes on a whole new meaning. In battles, mages would often have a chef in their team, ensuring they're always powered up. Culinary schools are as revered as magical academies. And in this world, a chef's hat is just as respected as a wizard's hat. The transformative power of food has ancient roots in the world. When consumed with purpose, focus, and in certain circumstances, the very essence of what is eaten can infuse itself into the eater. For most, this transformative power is benign or even beneficial, but sometimes the result is wholly unexpected. Merfolks: Legends state that during an ancient calamity, a group of stranded humans were trapped on a series of sinking islands. With their usual sources of sustenance gone, they became wholly dependent on the bounty of the sea. Day in and day out, their thoughts were consumed by the ocean and its life, and as they ate only fish and seaweed, slowly their limbs became webbed, scales grew, and tails formed where legs once were. Over generations, the merfolk fully adapted to the aquatic environment and built their unique underwater society. Sahrawa: In contrast, the Sahrawa tales tell of tribes in vast deserts where, during a particularly brutal drought, the only sustenance to be found was the meat of snakes and reptiles. Coupled with the desperation of survival and the intense focus on these creatures, some of the tribe members found themselves undergoing a profound change. Their legs fused, elongated, and scaled, turning into powerful serpentine tails. Adapted to the dunes and the shifting sands, the Sahrawa rose as nomadic traders and guardians of ancient desert secrets. Tentacle Seekers: In the modern age, with the understanding of the magical transformative potential of food, some subcultures have formed around deliberate transformation. Tentacle seekers, as they're colloquially known, are individuals who are enamored by the idea of having tentacles. They believe that having tentacles offers increased agility, a unique aesthetic, or simply an otherworldly experience. They follow a strict diet, often supplemented by rituals and specific magical regimens, in hopes of undergoing the coveted transformation. However, it's not as straightforward as it sounds, and not everyone achieves the results they desire. Some end up with just one tentacle, others with tentacle-like patterns on their skin, and a rare few achieve the full transformation. Transformative diets have become a niche but notable field of magical culinary study. Researchers and chefs collaborate to understand and perhaps guide these transformations better. But cautionary tales abound, reminding everyone that intent, environment, and emotional state play a significant role in the results. For every successful merfolk or Sahrawa transformation, there are stories of unintended and often irreversible outcomes. Magical Navigation and Weather DiviningBalancing Chaos and Order: Practitioners of nautical magic often operate on a thin line between chaos and order. The sea itself is the embodiment of the eternal dance between the two, with its unpredictable storms and calm patterns.
Safeguarding the Vessel:
Dangers of Imbalance:
Maintaining the Balance: Nautical magicians often wear talismans that change color based on their current magical alignment. This helps them, and their shipmates, keep track of their balance. Furthermore, ship crews usually have more than one practitioner aboard, each trained to recognize signs of magical imbalance in their peers and to intervene when necessary. The dance between order and chaos on the high seas is a testament to human adaptability and the intricate balance that nature itself holds. Music's influence on MagicIn a world where music fuels the magic, different genres have diverse effects, nuances, and resonances. Here's a breakdown of how different genres interact with the arcane: 1. Metal: Affinity with Chaos Metal, with its raw power and electrifying energy, naturally resonates with Chaos. Its aggressive guitar riffs and drums amplify chaotic spells, especially those used in battle. Yet, there's an element of discipline in the tight musical structures and techniques metal musicians employ. When practiced well, metal can maintain a balance, and magic users can harness the chaotic power without being overwhelmed. 2. Classical: Affinity with Order Classical music, with its meticulous compositions, aligns closely with Order. Conjurations and enchantments thrive when classical tunes are played. Its disciplined nature can lend stability to magical constructs, making spells last longer. However, a well-timed improvisation on a classical piece might bring unexpected magical results. 3. Jazz: Balancing Order and Chaos Jazz is the art of structured improvisation. It can harmonize both Order and Chaos, making it potent for skilled magic users looking for balance. Casting spells with jazz could yield unpredictable yet controlled outcomes. 4. Rap: Narrative Magic Rap, being rooted in storytelling and rhythmic vocal expression, helps in casting narrative-based spells. It can manifest visions, illusions, or dreams. The beats and words can either skew towards Order or Chaos depending on the message and style of the rapper. 5. Pop: Emotional Magic Pop music, often focused on emotions and relationships, can be used to influence feelings. Enchantments of love, happiness, or even sadness can be accentuated with a pop song. The clearer the emotional intent of the song, the stronger the spell. 6. EDM (Electronic Dance Music): Affinity with Group Energy EDM thrives on the collective energy of dancers. When EDM plays, the collective consciousness of the dancers powers the magic. It could amplify a spell's reach, affect large groups, or even create protective barriers around venues. The magic is as dynamic as the beat drops. 7. Country: Affinity with Earth and Nature Rooted in tales of the land, love, and everyday life, country music resonates well with spells related to nature, healing, and grounding. It's great for rituals that connect with the earth or spells that seek to bring peace and harmony. 8. Blues: Channeling Past and Emotions Blues, with its deep roots in expressing sorrow, hope, and the struggles of life, is potent for spells that channel past energies, memories, or ancestral connections. It might also help in understanding or influencing the emotional states of others. In this world, musicians hold a place of reverence. Their performances can be spellbinding in the literal sense, and concerts become grand magical rituals. Whether it's the stirring strings of a violin, the pulsating beat of electronic music, or the soulful words of a rapper, each note and lyric has the power to shape reality. Zen Paradox of Magic: Passion vs PrecisionMagic, in its ineffable nature, has perplexed and amazed the people of this post-apocalyptic world. Its dual-natured manifestations give rise to an intriguing paradox: can magic be controlled through meticulous study or is it an uncontrollable force that spontaneously emerges from pure passion?
The Fluidity of Magic Among Order and ChaosMagic, with its dual paths of passionate spontaneity and studied precision, does not always conform to the strict dichotomies of Order and Chaos. While at a cursory glance, one might presume Order to exclusively embrace precision and Chaos to solely favor passion, the truth is more intricate.
