The Hanwu were an ork tribe that bonded with cheetah, taking them as pets and companions, and burying them as honorary orks. This is the source of the tribe's distinctive ears, tails, and other cat-like features. However, tragedy struck the tribe three generations back, and the core fungal mass was lost. The few remnants of the Hanwu joined with Izwald, discarding their pride to save their children. Many turned to addiction, unfortunately.

Malu Hanwu became a compulsive gambler after his wife, Lana, died in childbirth. One day, after a run of exceedingly good luck, he lost all of his horses on a single bet. Kicked out and beaten for trying to offer his daughter for one more try, Malu was branded to display his lack of honor. It was upon this day, that Lewi decided that she no longer needed her father, and struck the wu from her name. She joined the Izwaldan military in search for a new purpose, and was snapped up by Near's first wave of recruiting shortly after leaving basic training.

Lewi has three younger brothers, all under 10 years old. Tewu (8), Lumi (7), and Losa (4).
