Factions

The Feds - Nominally, the Canadian and American federal governments still exist (the latter certainly does; the former may have been annexed right before the communications infrastructure went).

The Counts - Nondemocratic counties and some nominally democratic counties are ruled by autocrats with varying titles. The secular sort tend to be fast and loose with their law.

The Bishops - Nondemocratic counties and some nominally democratic counties are ruled by autocrats with varying titles. The religious sort tend to uphold their version of the law fairly, if inflexibly.

The Objectivists - From their base in Colorado, Objectivists promise as much electricity as you can pay for, no quotas. All you have to do to join their cult of prosperity is forego any restraint to ruthless efficiency, such as compassion. They seem oddly interested in reaching Springport, Pennsylvania.

The Mormons - The closest thing to an organized state west of the Rockies, the Mormon Church is not expansionist or militant, but has little tolerance for unbelievers within its territory.

The Amish - Unwelcoming and stern, but compassionate, the Amish want to preserve their way of life.

The Legion - Operating from armored trains, the Iron Legion is one part protection racket, one part repair service.

The Holmists - An amalgamation of the KKK and similar racial-purity and kinist organizations, these roaming hordes champion a virulently violent, misogynistic, and hypersurvivalist society, believing that civilization itself was a disease.

The Bandits - Operating on horseback or by train, remnants of the army or gangs that stuck together through thick and thin, bandits wage their war of opportunity against anything weaker than them, only to melt into a dust cloud when they meet organized resistance.
