GlossaryAcreocracy, accerocracy: Local gentry / landowners / feudal lords, whatever they happen to call themselves. Portmanteau of "acreage" and "aristocracy", probably. Ask No Adds: Don't look for freebies or favors; bartering will be strict; enough with the haggling, take it or leave it. Fream, freem: Someone who is obviously from out of town. Giddy Goose: A rail-truck, from the "Galloping Goose" railcar. Usually a modified old road vehicle. Going Amok: Portmanteu of "running amuck" and "going ape", indicates a paroxysm of destruction brought about by hopelessness. Hacked: Mad, annoyed, angry - generally the cold vengeful sort, rather than the irrational sort. Horn: Radio, phone, any still-functional piece of telecommunication really. Iron: Weapons or armor, anything that helps you fight. Probably from "iron jaw" in boxing, and from the use of soft iron in making armor plating. Upscale saloons and courtrooms will usually have a drop-your-iron valet. Ironback: An armored fighter, who sacrifices speed for strength and endurance. Kings X: Said when calling a truce, time-out, pause. Landlord: A generic term for whoever is in charge of a community. Democracy seems to be on the way out. Nub: A wad of black powder and guncotton that allows shooting firearms without a proper cartridge. Nub bullets are often made from lead or tin melted on a campfire, and poured directly into the barrel for shaping. Pejorative, as in "I only got nub shot left". On the line, on line: Moving on the rails, usually quickly. Said of cargo, fugitives, news etc. On the Prod: Looking for a fight. Quirley: Homemade cigarette containing who knows what. Randy, Randy Dandy: An objectivist "missionary". Pejorative. Smoker: A steam or woodgas engine. Thongs: Makeshift shoes/socks, usually a collection of rags. Tinman, Flattop: Catch-all for whatever "law enforcement" an area has, usually muscle in the local lord's service. Tonk: An off-rail vehicle with armor and a weapon, usually a machine gun or a small field artillery piece, but sometimes just a catapult. A landlord's power is often measured by how many of these vehicles he has. Steam or woodgas driven, tonks are slow. Most are built out of tractors, and can pull double-duty as construction equipment when necessary. "Tank" means water or fuel tank. Troq: Pejorative/slur, said of someone who does not belong to this community's majority race. Racially specific insults have largely been appropriated by their original targets, resulting in this strange condensation. Probably a derivation of "troglodyte". Wake the Snakes: Make trouble. Specifically, create a distraction so that the other half of your band can run a quiet raid on the settlement. Whitebread: Refers to easily barterable trade goods, white flatbread being a prime example thereof. |
