MindOverMatter

The objectivists call it the Light of Reason; medicine men in Oklahoma call it orenda; the old freedmen in Georgia call it shtani; shootists call it plain grit; snake-oil peddlers and rainmakers may call it any number of things from mani to orgone to animal magnetism.

While the supernatural does not exist in this world -- barring stories of ghosts banging on anvils in the old factories, zombies in Louisiana, and Guan-Di haunting the mines where Chinese wage slaves worked -- most of those who practice a craft, be it metalwork or sharpshooting, know that putting passion and faith into it can give better results than one might have the right to expect by math.

Of course, it may also be the effect of just the right amount of uppers or psychedelics applied at the right moment...

However it really is, it's universally known that working with the knowledge that one is advancing one's spiritual goals, or defending one's beliefs, or protecting one's loves ones gives a person's words, actions, and blows an edge that they would not otherwise have. This edge is a combination of strength of desperation, the placebo effect, and maybe -- just maybe -- the smile of a god, saint or spirit.

When all the chips are down, it might make the difference between dying in a ditch and dragging yourself to safety, or making that impossible eyeslit shot and missing by half an inch.
