Most people, once they have learned to ride rigs, personalize their own to fit their flying style; a rig's Attunement determines how easy it is to mod, and generally decreases by one for each mod. Prices and reliability vary wildly, but there is a baseline that depends on the aircraft's price.
Easy mods can be performed by a rig mechanic, usually with the customer helping so that they know what was done to the rig; a competent aviator can also do these themselves. Medium mods require a workshop and talented mechanic, or a team of two or three technicians. Hard mods generally require a specialist to oversee the work, and the sort of large workshop found in ports or military bases.
EASY | Cost | Drawbacks | Benefits | Description |
Barebones | 5% | Comfort -1 | Speeds +5, range +15 | The fuselage has been lightened by removing seat padding and compartments. |
Injection Booster | 5% | Speeds -5, range -15 | Power +1 | A diesel or alcohol injector is added to the engine, allowing for short bursts of acceleration during combat. The extra weight slows the rig down when not in use. Running the booster occasionally so that it runs out of fuel by the end of the trip negates all penalties (you essentially have +1 power for the disadvantage of a more expensive trip). |
Wing Extensions | 5% | Speeds -5 | Range +30, +alt | Lengthened wings increase efficiency and glide slope at the expense of top speed. It can also be used to maintain altitudes that a rig would normally not be able to maintain. |
Extra Hardpoint | 5% | Speeds -5, range -15 | Extra weapon mount | An extra weapon mount is made available to support bolters and contact weapons. |
Hillbilly Armor | 5% | Speeds -20, range -30 | Resilience +1 | The fuselage is layered with extra fabric or even alluminium plates, and the chassis reinforced with redundant struts. |
Crystal Hopper | 5% | Speeds -10 | Range * 1.5 | Adds a crystal container with a hopper, or expands the existing one. |
MEDIUM | Cost | Drawbacks | Benefits | Description |
Drop Crystal Hopper | 10% | Speeds -10 | Range * 1.5 | Same as the crystal hopper above, but the extra hopper can be dropped when empty, negating penalties. This gets expensive, and is generally only used by patrol fighters that may need the extra speed in an engagement. |
Gastroburner | 10% | Speeds -5, range -20, maneuver -1 | Power +3,+alt | A single-use solid rocket booster allows running away from any one fight or dangerous situation. Actually using it negates the range penalty. It can also be used to reach altitudes that a rig would normally not be able to reach. Popular in Kerbia. |
Expansion cylinder | 10% | Range -10 | Speeds +10 | An auxilliary low pressure cylinder is added to the engine(s) in order to increase cruise speed without greatly sacrificing efficiency. |
Tailored Armor | 10% | Speeds -10, range -15 | Resilience +1 | The fuselage is layered or replaced with high-quality fabrics, and the chassis struts are strenghtened and replaced with higher quality ones when necessary. |
HARD | Cost | Drawbacks | Benefits | Description |
Variable Geometry | 20% | Resilience -1 | Maneuver +1 OR Power +1 | The rig's wings can be partially or fully swept, turning them into large control surfaces. This makes the rig less sturdy due to the extra hinges. Mode takes one round to change, during which neither bonus is in effect. |
NAVCOM | 20% | Speeds -5, range -10 | Synchro +3 | A collection of gyroscopes and strain gages installed throughout the rig that allow the pilot to be able to pay attention to things other than piloting. While true autonavigation is not considered feasible at this time, in a pinch this allows the pilot to take brief naps when the skies are clear. |
Wave Shield | 20% | Speeds -5, range -10 (-5/use) | Repulsion | A very carefully tuned psi circuit built into the dashboard, with tendrils reaching the rig's extremities, allows the pilot to burn a fuel crystal to subtly change the trajectory of incoming objects by generating a brief shockwave. Projectiles that weren't aimed perfectly will be deflected and cause only minor damage, and collisions will be easier to avert. The crystal has to be replaced quickly to be used again. |
Mesh Armor | 20% | Range -5 | Resilience +1 | All or most fabric or alluminium paneling is replaced with hand-woven mesh made of wingcape grade fibers interwoven with alluminium wire. This gives excellent protection with virtually no loss of performance. The mesh is famously difficult to paint or embroider, so in general a pilot's crest is sewn on somewhere aerodynamically safe. |
Overnight Runner | 10% | Range -5, Resilience -1 | Speeds +10, +alt | This is a Kerbian-style modification which involves jettisoning non-essential parts of the rig to get additional speed and altitude. Generally used by Space Race participants. It can also be used to reach altitudes that a rig would normally not be able to reach. |
