ThracionThracion is a medium sized, sparsely populated canton that unlike many others, was actually settled within living memory. Initially formed by a combination of reactionary response to Selenite ideology and a particularly high chauvanist density aboard a ship of exiles departing Tsuxia, the soon-to-be Thracions were gratified to find the brother-installation to the one around which the Selenites built their capitol, which allowed them after some experimentation, and only a few horrible maimings, to likewise commence the process of building a monogendered society not unlike on Seleny. To the outside observer, it is difficult at first to see how Thracion society manages to function. The most obvious question is the seeming dichotomy between the toga-and-beer-hat (which, despite the name, has been oberved on various occasions to contain spiritous fluids of no less than fifty-seven different origins) party-goer and the oft-armoured bleak-faced mercenaries and soldiers for which Thracion is famed and feared in commercial and military circles. The society is loosely stratified between Boys and Men, and while usually used to denote age and maturity, among native Thracions it is entirely the latter. There is no age limit at which one must cease the revelries of Boyhood and adopt the decorum of Manhood (which is not to say the Thracion Men do not enjoy themselves, they just (attempt to) do so without making a public spectacle of themselves. (Decker's Notes: Making a bifocal of oneself is far more practical.) However, Boys are unable to own property, speak in Senate, or vote in elections or referendums. While most Boys beyond the actual age of childhood do work for a living in some trade or role, they do not technically possess their own wages, which in fact go to their parent/s, or for immigrants, their patron. Boys who do NOT do this often find their parent/patron encouraging them to undertake the trial of Manhood with extensive vehemence. A Boy becomes a Man in Thracion by taking part in the continuance of the nation. A significant period of military and paramilitary training is followed by taking part in one of the annual raids on the Tsuxian Plateau with the goal of 'liberating' (read: kidnapping) as many young women as they can carry, for the purposes of procreation. No rape actually occurrs during this endeavour, if a Thracion is caught doing so, his commanding officer is obliged to behead him on the ship's foredeck, and both head and body are to be flung from the ship to fall into the mists. Any Thracion who does not sucessfully seduce one of the 'liberated' women may try again next year (as many times as they have will for), or surrender their armour and acknowledge they lack the fundamental capacity to become a Man. Giving up in this manner is risky at best, such a Confirmed Boy who is not re-accepted by their former patron or offered the patronage of another is exiled. Those women who are not seduced are offered the choice of joining Thracion as Boys themselves, or being given a small stipend and dropped off at one of the cantons used to accepting Tsuxian refugees. Women who are seduced but do not concieve have these choices, though also the option to keep trying for kids first. Those who do concieve live with the father of their children in seclusion until the children are born, have such choices once the child or children are born, though if they choose to join Thracion they do so as Men rather than Boys, having already taken part in ensuring a new generation of Thracions. Both Men in such a pairing are highly regarded in Thracion society. Many may note the similarities between this and the Selenite custom of raiding to take Tsuxian males. It is speculated that the number of those liberated by the Selenites who have become Thracions, and vise versa, is why the two groups are no longer actively at war (Metaphysicists have speculated that just as Thracion must exist to balance Selenis, the prank war between the two lands must exist to balance the ponderous and derailing debates that invariably happen when Selenite and Thrax delegates find themselves in the same room). Thracion is primarily a republic led by the senate, though the ceremonial ruler is the Man most adept at operating the facility at which females wishing to become Thracions become male. He is called The Smith, or on formal occasions, the Maker Of Tools. Much like at the Selenite facility of similar purpose, the large array of named xtal crystals which enables the procedure to occur is loosely understood at best, and all attempts to replicate it have thus far failed. As such, they make sure to have on hand as much refined xtal as possible, as the society would swiftly break down were the facility to be activated with insufficient fuel and consume part of the array. Representatives of both lands have continued to deny a link between the arrays, with neutral historians mostly smiling, nodding and pointing to known examples of post-Invasion attempts to increase the depleted gene pool by any means - quite a few foreign xenoarcheologists are convinced that the two gender-changing crystal arrays are in fact linked together and couldn't exist separately, and represent an Invader attempt to survive past the destruction of their cloning facilities.
