THE C551 GARIBALDI

Formerly the flagship of the Italian Navy, the aircraft-carrying cruiser Garibaldi externally resembles a USN amphibious assault ship, or a 1950s-era carrier. She is the first through-deck ship ever completed by an Italian shipyard. Due to the small budget afforded to the Italian navy, she is designed to be quickly reconfigured for a multitude of roles ranging from amphibious assault to anti-submarine warfare to hospital ship. Ryan Andrews rescued her from being scrapped as part of Carpatescu's demilitarization initiative, and had her sold to CATS for scrap metal value, upon which she was re-registered as a fast cargo vessel. Reconfiguring the Garibaldi is a complexity-one action, but due to the modular design of the ship, the Garibaldi is available for the new role either immediately or at the beginning of next month, at the Foreman's discretion. She was designed to carry AV-8 Harrier jumpjets and helicopters, and eventually the STOVL variant of the F35 joint strike fighter; instead, you currently have AN-2 biplanes on her, that can be used for paradrops, medevac, and light close air support.

Brief bios of the people you have come across follow:

Harriet Durham is Nicolae Carpatescu's personal assistant. You believe that he, like you, uses an expert system for handling most of the day-to-day maintenance tasks in his office. Hattie was a senior flight attendant, young and beautiful, working for Pan-Continental Airlines. She seemed to be attracted to Pan-Con pilot Rayford Steele, perhaps wanting an affair with him. During her last flight, to Heathrow Airport the day of the Event, she told him that she was leaving Pan-Con for the United Nations, thanks to a certain William Cameron sending letters to Carpatescu about her. A few days later she arrives at Steele's house, pleading for him to come with her, but he tells her he found what he was missing, Jesus Christ and that the disappearances was the Rapture. She figures that he has lost his mind after losing his wife and son, and leaves without him. Hattie, who convinced William to introduce her to Carpatescu, eventually becomes his personal secretary. She is currently in a relationship with Carpatescu, that the two have not yet made public. She's known for being an excellent hostess; your analysts say that the arm-candy act is just that, an act, and one of her jobs is specifically to make Carpatescu look more down to earth as she provides him with a second set of eyes. She's since fallen out of favor with Carpatescu, and may be dead.

Rayford Steele: Carpatescu's personal pilot. A fairly unremarkable (if competent) individual whose claim to fame is having landed a damaged airliner in a river with no loss of life.

William Cameron is editor-at-large for the Global Community Weekly, which has come to be more or less the newsmag of record. As a reporter, he was known for his gonzo approach, delivering few stories but making each a part of public interest with incredible ease; he called himself the American answer to Oriana Fallaci. With the death of the latter a few days after the Event, he was seen (largely by himself) as picking up her torch. A more thorough analysis of Cameron's writing indicates that he does very little actual work; you reckon that he mostly got where he is due to his ability to stoke office politics. He did, to his credit, manage to get a few interviews with the normally secretive biologist Chaim Roszenweig, primary inventor of the Eden fertilizer. Member of the Christian Remnant. He has recently been fired for absenteeism.

Ryan Andrews is a former shipbuilding magnate who has pivoted his career int becoming a telecom frequency, bandwidth and easements broker. He also owns several electronics factories.

Dr. Hamish Robertson is a Canadian nuclear physicist who is currently investigating a nuclear anomaly for CATS.

Moira McSingh is an Irish demolitions expert and former IRA member.

Tsion Ben-Judah is a former Rabbi and now Christian theologian.

Aki Lattinen is some sort of mad scientist hacker.

Rehoboth Rehoboth is one of the ten subpotentates chosen by Nicolae Carpatescu to be put in charge of the United African States. He is a tyrant who pillaged his own country of Sudan and made multi-millionaires of his wives and children, and thus is greatly hated by his own people. He was given the subpotentate position as an insult to Mwangati Ngumo, who had stepped down from his role as the Secretary-General of the United Nations expecting to be given both the subpotentate role and licensed use of the synthetic fertilizer formula created by Chaim Rosenzweig to help his own country, Botswana. He is hostile towards CATS.

Od Gustav: The subpotentate of the United European States. His command of languages rivals that of Carpatescu. Formerly a hospital administrator.

Douglas Dimmsdale: A former United States senator from Texas. Wears a ten-gallon hat and embroidered cowboy suit. Current subpotentate of the United North American States.

Pravin Lal: The subpotentate of the United Indian States. A fervent advocate of the United Nations' peacekeeping mission, he was one of the first people to sign up with Carpatescu. He was an accomplished neurosurgeon before entering politics, after an accident left him with a hand tremor.

Viktor Zakharov: The subpotentate of the United Russian States. A technocrat's technocrat and member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, he supports CATS' mission and was disappointed when Carpatescu vetoed installing CATS'HQ in Russia.

Shangzong Yang: The subpotentate of the United Asian States. Chinese father, Japanese mother. Master of the Five Excellences: calligraphy, poetry, painting, traditional medicine, and martial arts (including martial tai-chi, wushu, and others). Studied Military History at Beijing University, later acquired a PhD in Psychology from same.

Corazon Santiago: The subpotentate of the United South American States. Argentinian by birth, she survived the purges in her childhood by taking up arms early. Very much a fan of the right to bear arms. Known for her incorruptibility and Spartan lifestyle. CATS has entered a sort of informal alliance with her.

Abdurrahman Wahid: The subpotentate of the United Pacific States and briefly President of Indonesia. He is a competent administrator, but he is disliked by non-Indonesians and especially Australians for privileging development of his home territory over other lands under his jurisdiction.

Terry April: The subpotentate of the United Great Britian States, also responsible for keeping the British royal family nominally on the throne as "People's Representatives". Mostly busy dealing with ending the Troubles in a way that isn't too heavy handed.
